Some months ago I was invited to join the Advisory Board of Sit-at-the-Table (SATT) and try and help a start-up NFP that said it aims to do something about the imbalance of the number of women (to men) on boards. (Alberta - Canada Group) I was happy to offer my help.
My position has always been that, yes imbalances and biases should be rectified - but I have never supported the idea that a lot of the women on this SATT group want to believe, that women (as a group) are better than men. Sure some women are better than some men, but the idea that gender is the main qualifier isjust nonsense to my mind - either way
If a woman is equally or better qualified for a position, she should have it. Same for men.
Simply suggesting that women or men are just "better" is sexist and it isn't going to help the cause. Most middle class well educated folk don't tend to have a real gender bias - why try to promote that confrontation?
My view is that boards need to publically state their standards and requirements and then justify why there are few women (no women). Why the male candidates always seem to get the job.
A number of SATT members don't get this. They have proposed such things as brand boycotts by women. They believe that only women can understand "female products".
Durung an online group discussion one of my fellow SATT advisory board memebers publically said that I would never understand the issues because I was a man. I told her that was an appalling thing to suggest to someone who was invited to participate and is trying to help. No reponse or comment from other SATT Advisory Board members (even the guys? - but surely some women in the group didn't agree with this line??). I said I would resign - still no comment. So I am out of there. - no tace remains
What I simply do not understand and find repugnant is that this group says it is anti gender bias - yet is obviously not. Any dissention is swept away.
What is going on there? What are they really about? (Its the Power and tax exempt state I guess).
I don't htink they really want to help women - I think they are going to be in it primarily for themselves.
